Light Up Your Decor for Fall and Winter

Now that it’s time to turn back the clocks and enter Daylight Savings time, you’re going to be reaching for that light switch far more frequently. You’re also likely beginning to think about the upcoming holiday season and all of the entertaining you’ll be doing throughout the rest of the year. Sprucing up your decor with some new lighting fixtures can help to enhance the look of every room in your home and allow you to light up those long fall and winter nights in the utmost of style.

There are many options available for changing your lighting or adding new lighting to your home, including:

egg bottom sconceWall Sconces

Mounting one or more sconces on your walls can serve two key functions. First, you’ll get the benefit of soft illumination to make rooms brighter, and secondly, you can make an empty stretch of wall far more interesting and visually appealing. Wall sconce lighting fixtures will throw light in different ways, depending on their design. For example, our Ceramic Bowl Sconce directs light upward, while our Egg Bottom Sconce provides vertical lighting as well as gorgeous beams of light along the sides and bottom.

Pendant Lights

Suspended from the ceiling by chains or wires, pendant lights make use of available overhead space to add illumination to a room. Typically, larger pendant lights are used over focal points in a space like our Egg Shell Ceramic Pendant Light, which brings a whimsical look to a room while lighting up a dining room table or another key furnishing. Smaller pendant lights Cylinder Pendant Light can be hung alone or in groups as main lights or accent lights in a space.

Like pendant lights, ceiling lights aim illumination toward the ground. Some designs like our Bowl Ceiling Light with Leaflets rest close to the ceiling, while others like our Ceiling Light with Abstract Maize Border are mounted on arms that lower them into the space to suit higher ceilings. Very versatile, ceiling light fixtures can be used in any room of the home from guest bedrooms to kitchens to bathrooms to living rooms.

In rooms where you don’t have the option to add wall or ceiling lighting, a table lamp can instantly brighten up a space. Because they are placed on top of tables, desks and other furnishings inside of homes, table lamps become a powerful accent to the overall decor of a room. Unique lights like our Tree Trunk Ceramic Table Lamp can bring character and personality to bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms and dens.

Named after the famous scenes in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, these faux balconies come in an assortment of styles and designs. Easily installed along the exterior of your home or commercial property, these unique wrought iron balconies provide an affordable method of transforming your property and adding to its curb appeal.

What is a Faux Balcony?

For those that are not familiar with the concept of a faux balcony, they are essentially a decorative balcony that can be added to the exterior of a window. There are fairly easy to install and do not require major construction. Typically made from wrought iron, faux balconies often feature elegant lines and scrollwork. They look great along the exterior of any home and can be used to add more character to a bland window.

Choosing a Juliette Balcony

As with any addition to the exterior of your home, you should make your selection carefully and put some thought into the balcony you choose. Each wrought iron Juliet balcony that we carry is available in a variety of colors and sizes. For example, our Addison Juliet Balcony can be purchased in black, white copper, bronze, silver, or textured bronze. This particular balcony fits closely against the window and a subtle addition that can easily blend in with the exterior appearance of your property. For a more striking appearance, the Brantford Juliet Balcony should be considered. It features highly detailed scrollwork throughout the entire design. The Brantford Juliet Balcony will definitely draw attention to your home and features the same color options as the Addison balcony. If you are looking for a design that is more in the middle, the classical look of our Cassia Juliet Balcony could be what you are looking for. The simple lines and elegant curves along the bottom of this wrought iron Juliet balcony offer a more traditional look and resembles what most people probably imagine when they picture a Juliet balcony.

Creating Unique Arrangements with Terrariums & Lanterns

Everyone has a few empty spaces in their home that are just calling out for their perfect finishing touch to bring polish to the room. Artificial and living arrangements displayed in lanterns and terrariums are unique solutions to the riddle of “What could go there?” Here are some ideas to get you inspired filling up those empty spaces with the beauty of plants growing or arranged in eye-catching containers:

[one_half]

  1. For the Walls. Everyone’s got them–those small spots on the walls that are noticeably empty but not large enough for a piece of art or a framed photo. Small wall-mounted terrariums and lanterns can fit into those spaces with ease, and there are many different types available. You can purchase terrarium kits with colorful flower seeds included like the Wall Cone Terrarium with Plants that give red, pink, white and purple flowers for no-fuss arranging. If you prefer silks to living plants, you can also choose something like the Valencia Hanging Wall Lantern and Hook Set and fill the globe with fake succulents, flowers or herbs instead of a candle.[/one_half][one_half_last]

  1. For Overhead Space. High ceilings make a room feel spacious and open, but they can pose some interior design challenges. In areas where furniture has a low profile, the wide open space can seem a little too empty. Installing a hanging lantern like the Antiqued Gold Gazebo Hanging Lantern filled with an arrangement of artificial flowers or faux greenery will beautifully fill the space without adding any extra maintenance to your home.[/one_half][one_half_last]

  1. For the Corner. Is that one corner in the living room’s emptiness painfully obvious? A freestanding terrarium can transform that spot into a stunning indoor garden. An elegant design like the 58″ Tall Freestanding Wardian Terrarium Case will bring sophistication to the decor of the room where you entertain guests, and as an added bonus, you can be sure it will become a conversation piece. Everyone will want to get up close and marvel at your lovely garden.

  1. For the Dining Table. Purchasing a fresh flower arrangement every time you invite guests over to dine can get expensive and be a hassle. Forgo the bouquets and perishable candle centerpieces and instead display a group of terrarium candles like our Hammered Hurricane Terrariums. Fill the bottoms with realistic artificial plants that complement your decor, and you’ll have a stunning centerpiece that will stand the test of time. You can even change out the plants to match the season or holiday or to complement the look of the dinnerware you’re using for every occasion.[/one_half]

  1. For Accent Tables & Shelves. You don’t want your home to look cluttered, but bare tables and shelves can be just too spartan. A terrarium filled with flowers, succulents or mosses can take up that empty space and transform it with living beauty. A small tabletop terrarium like our 8.5 inch Small Terrarium is a great choice for beginners, and this simple design will complement most styles of decor. [/one_half]

Faux Bracket Placement Guide for Window Boxes

With their crisp lines and beautiful plants and flowers, window boxes are a great addition to any interior or exterior window. But the finishing touch to creating a show-stopping piece is something small – a faux bracket or decorate corbel. Our window planter boxes are so sturdy and easy to install that they don’t need visible brackets supporting them from underneath. However, faux brackets can add a great detail to a window box and provide the perfect finishing touch.

No-Rot, Everlasting Beauty

Our faux brackets come in a variety of styles to match our many window box options. Faux brackets for our PVC window boxes are made of resilient weather resistant materiel and are designed to not rot or mildew while providing you a lifetime of beautiful flower boxes that look like real wood. Check out our selection of composite flower boxes and brackets to find the perfect style for your home.

Fake brackets for direct mount window boxes can be painted to coordinate with the flowers or color scheme of your home. If your PVC flower boxes fall into the XL category (these boxes have an XL before the name, such as XL Premier Hampton or XL Premier Laguna), the classic XL faux bracket is the right size and style for you. All other types of PVC window boxes work well with the standard faux bracket. No matter the size, the traditional shape of these brackets make them a subtle but stylish accent to complete your look.

3 Faux Brackets Looks Great on Windows with 2 Panes

How many brackets do I need?

Once you have determined the style of your window box brackets, you need to purchase the correct amount. Faux brackets are sold individually, so you can purchase as many as you desire.

In general, we recommend:

  • 2 brackets for 24″ to 48″ window boxes
  • 3 brackets for 60″ window boxes
  • 4 brackets for the 72″ window boxes

When using multiple brackets, measure in from the sides so that the brackets are spaced evenly to create a cohesive and uniform look. Installing the brackets is a simple process – after measuring and lightly marking where each bracket will go, use a PVC adhesive to attach brackets to the bottom of the window box and allow to dry. The window boxes can them be hung easily using normal installation instructions.

Faux brackets are a simple detail that can make a big impact on the overall look of your window boxes. It doesn’t take much time or effort to put together a flawless and complete look! For more information about decorative brackets for window boxes, go to Hooks & Lattice and check out our Brackets section.

Fresh Ways to Use Christmas Wreaths

Welcome guests with the fresh look and SMELL of balsam pine boughs.

Welcome guests with the fresh look and SMELL of balsam pine boughs.

Fresh Ways to Use Christmas Wreaths

Smells have a way of evoking feelings and memories from long ago.  For me, the smell of cut pine will forever make me think of carefully crafting Christmas wreaths with my father in our back yard.  While I no longer make my own holiday wreaths thanks to time constraints and lack of easy access to materials, I enjoy the flood of memories that comes whenever I get a strong whiff of evergreen.

Fresh Christmas wreaths have been used for centuries to celebrate the season.  Traditionally hung on the front door to welcome guests from next door or across the county, creative homeowners have been coming up with some interesting Christmas decorating ideas using this age old symbol of the season.

Where to hang your Christmas Wreaths

While a wreath hung on the front door will never go out of style, there is no reason to stop there.  With a little imagination, a wreath can be turned into a multi-purpose Christmas decoration.

In a window

Many holiday wreaths are hand crafted works of art, to beautiful to keep to yourself.  If you are looking to share your Christmas spirit with the whole neighborhood but don’t want to subject your wreaths to the elements, try hanging wreaths inside your home in street facing windows.  If you like the idea of a wreath hanging in your window but want to enjoy it yourself, just hang your wreath inside the curtains.

Over your table

A big part of Christmas celebrations is the family meal.  The memories made when gathered around the table with close friends and family really is the reason for the season.  Help bring the spirit of the season to the dining room by hanging a wreath horizontally above the dinner table like a holiday chandelier.  Any meal eaten under a wreath is bound to be filled with joy and holiday spirit.

Above your bed

Around the holiday season, sleep can become pretty rare.  Between visits with rarely seen relatives, late night and early morning shopping trips, and the always-enjoyable gift wrapping sessions, sleep deprivation can set in early around Christmas.  When you do get the chance lay your head down, wouldn’t it be nice to drift off with memories of Christmases past floating through mind?  Hanging a wreath above your headboard is a great way to remind yourself why you love the season each night before bed.

This year when you decorate for Christmas, remember that wreathes are not just for the front door, spread the joy around your home with these Christmas decorating ideas. For the highest quality fresh Christmas wreaths visit HooksandLattice.com. Handcrafted fresh Christmas wreaths shipped express to doorsteps around the country and guarateed.

Wrap-Around Iron Faux Balcony

Faux Balconies that Make a Statement

Wrap-Around Iron Faux Balcony

This wrap-around balcony is gorgeous, and makes this house the envy of the neighborhood.

Faux Balconies that Make a Statement

A quick and easy way to add character to a home and boost curb appeal is to add a faux balcony. It provides a unique and personalized look without the need for expensive construction of building an actual balcony. Plus, it adds a whimsical touch to both the inside and outside of your home. Here are three ways to use iron home accents to create a faux balcony that really makes a statement:

Add faux balconies with no offset to windows and doors for a boost of upscale curb appeal.

Add faux balconies with no offset to windows and doors for a boost of upscale curb appeal.

Juliet Balcony

Named after the great Shakespeare character, Juliet balconies are faux balconies that look like they could be real, but it lies nearly flat against the home. Their iron accents create visual interest and elongate the window, while creating the look of a French door. The Westwood Decorative Balcony mixes contemporary and classic styles for an interesting piece that will match most architectural styles. While Juliet balconies aren’t functional, they bring a sense of the outdoors in and are a great boost to the exterior of your home. For the complete look, use a Juliet balcony off the master bedroom, or across all windows on the upper level to create a uniform and stylish look.

Short Faux Balcony

While most Juliet balconies tend to be taller, some houses look best with shorter, more traditional faux balconies. The key to finding a decorative iron balcony that matches your home is to look at proportions. For homes with a shorter roof or less room under the window, a short faux balcony, such as this classic option, is the way to go. The shorter wrought iron decorative balcony adds interest and enhances the look of the windows without drowning out the rest of the home.

Finishing touches like finials and hand bent wrought iron scrollwork give your home a custom look and feel.

Finishing touches like finials and hand bent wrought iron scrollwork give your home a custom look and feel.

Pottery shelf

A less traditional take on the faux balcony is to install a decorative pottery shelf. Pottery shelves extend further from the home and are shorter underneath the window that other faux balconies. Like the name implies, they can hold pots or window boxes and can add a burst of colorful flowers to your home. The Dayspring pottery shelf is a charming option that looks great with or without plants and flowers inside. Although the shelf itself is shorter underneath the window, some pottery shelves like this scroll base model, have decorative iron elements underneath the shelves.

No matter which faux balcony you choose, the inside and outside of your home will benefit. The exterior will be lengthened and have an added charming touch, and the inside of your home will be opened and expanded with more access to the great outdoors. Faux balconies are the perfect simple way to make a big statement.

Design Idea: Place small accents and birdcages on the table as a decorative centerpiece.

5 of Our Favorite Bird Products

Is there any nature lover who doesn’t adore birds? Waking up to the delicate tones of birdsong and bird spotting in the early evening are just a few of the joys that birds bring to the world.

Birds: Universal Motifs of Peace

Images of birds have created a relaxing aesthetic in home décor for centuries, and pieces inspired by bird cages have rose in popularity since the Edwardian era. They add rustic charm to indoor and outdoor spaces alike. Here are five of our favorite bird products, from bird cage planters to bird houses.

  • Wood and Wire Birdcage Centerpieces. This set of two centerpieces measure 9.5″ W by 19.25″ H will charm your guests and create a sweet atmosphere in your home. However, we cannot recommend decorating your backyard with these centerpieces – their wooden base has not been treated to handle inclement weather.
  • Veranda Decorative Bird Cage. If you do want to express your love of birds on the outside of your property, consider adorning your deck or patio with this elegant fountain-like monument. The cage’s thin wires are perfect for displaying flowers you’ve grown in your garden, combined into a vibrant bouquet.
  • Medium Bird Cage Planter. With this indoor planter, you can move on from just showcasing your flowers and plants to growing them in a bird cage-inspired planet. The planter bowl is 9.5″ deep, and the iron wire frame of the cage is sturdy enough to support climbing vines. Every one of these planters has been painted by hand, so you’ll know that each one is truly unique!

Design Idea: Place small accents and birdcages on the table as a decorative centerpiece.

  • Medium Glass Bird Cloche on Stand. Say goodbye to traditional candy or pastry trays, and say hello to this coffee table-friendly glass cloche. It’s an ideal gift for anyone who’s had trouble deciding how to display their knick-knacks, collections, and other small treasures worthy of being shown off. The metal and iron wires of the black stand are reminiscent of a bird cage. This piece stands 7″ H, while the bowl itself is 1.75″ H and 6.5″ in diameter.
  • Driftwood Birdhouse. Out of these five products, this is the only one that real birds should actually use. This birdhouse is just as beautiful as it is functional. It’s sure to become a focal point of any outdoor area. Birds will flock to this birdhouse year after year to start families of their own, while you and your own family look upon the hatchlings with delight.

Safety Considerations

Unless the bird product you want to complement your home’s atmosphere specifically states that it is intended for use by actual animals, please do not use it for the housing or shelter of real birds. When in doubt, talk to a specialist at your local pet store about the best habitat for both domesticated and wild birds.
