Artificial Window Box Flowers - 2 Geranium Bushes to fill a 24" Window Box

Window Box Flowers: The Perfect Recipe

Nothing adds charm and beauty to a home quite like flower window boxes. From their delightful designs to bright colors, window boxes can add a beautiful pop of color to the interior or exterior of a home. But a common problem for people creating container gardens is choosing the flowers to plant. Instead of wondering if there are enough flowers to fill the window box or if the colors and styles are cohesive, our flower arrangements come in pre-made “recipes” to give you the exact amount of what you need to create a beautiful flower arrangement without stressing over the details. Even better, our flowers are artificial so they are easy to maintain for a bright look in every season. Made of the finest materials in the  highest quality, our DIY window box flowers make it easy to turn your home into a garden oasis. Here are three popular styles you can achieve with artificial floral arrangement recipes:

Ferns and Ivy

Create a flower box full of lush greenery and bright pops of color with our arrangements of buckler ferns and ivy. Our fern and ivy fronds are modeled after real varieties and have the details, shape, and texture of live plants to create a visually interesting mix. The mostly monochromatic nature of these arrangements make them a great accent to a modern home or a home with natural elements such as wood or stone details. Our 42″ fern and ivy mix adds brilliantly colored bromeliads for a unique exotic touch. And with high quality UV protection, the color won’t fade overtime, guaranteeing your ferns will be green and your flowers bright for years to come.

Bougainvillea

Add depth and length to your window box with our selection of faux bougainvillea vines. Our plants are full of leaves and flowers to give your window box a full, lush look that is lifelike and beautiful. This 30″ recipe features three vines for a complete look. Bougainvillea plants have unique textures and long vines, making them an interesting addition to a whimsical window box. Available in six colors ranging from red to lavender, our bougainvillea plants are made of fade-resistant materials to keep your flowers bright even if you don’t have a green thumb.

Available in pink, red, or white flowers, our faux geranium recipes can add a charming detail to any interior or exterior window box. To create an even more lifelike look, our geranium plants come with a mixture of leaves, flower clusters, and flower buds. This 24″ geranium recipe is full of the perfect amount of elements to fill your window box in a complete and professional way. With UV-resistant material, these geraniums will add cheerful details to your home year round.

Balcony gardens are some of the most unique and inspiring green refuges – but has your deck reached its full potential? You can make your deck stand out easily just by adding a few stylish planter boxes to your railings.

Right now, your herb garden looks alright. Your cilantro and basil are healthy and growing. Your lavender is in full bloom, but still, you feel like your garden lacks steam. A railing planter box could be the zest your balcony needs. HooksandLattice.com offers many decorative window boxes that can help spice up your yard and bring your deck to life.

Picking the Right Style for You

Deck rail brackets attach to the back of the cage easily.

  • The Arch Decora Metal window box can add a sleek, modern look to your balcony. The design of this box is achieved with a wrought iron cage and a black galvanized metal liner inside. Add a splash of color to this box with some bright, vibrant plants and your balcony garden is sure to look amazing.
  • For a more refined, elegant look, you could add the Medallion Decora box to your railing. This box features an iron cage design with a medallion at the center, and a window box liner on the inside to really make the look of the cage pop.
  • The Real Copper Lined Del Mar box would give your container garden a lovely antique appearance when the patina process that occurs on certain types of copper takes over. The copper will appear weathered and old fashioned, helping you achieve a nice vintage look.
  • Consider adding the Del Mar Flower Pot Holder to your deck railings for a more simplified look, or to complement your railing planter boxes. This flower pot holder is eight inches in size and looks great paired with a brightly colored flower pot, like these painted Terra Cotta flower pots sold at HooksandLattice.com.

Hanging Your Containers
Each of these containers can be added to your garden without any damage occurring to your railings. HooksandLattice.com offers several choices of affordable deck rail brackets for use with Decora boxes, but these brackets can turn any container in stock into the perfect railing box. For wooden deck rails, you can choose rail brackets from sizes 2″ x 4″, 2″ x 6″, and 2″ x 8″ to hang your decorative container. A steel rail bracket is the best choice for wrought iron and metal railings.  The beauty of hanging a container from your railing instead of simply underneath a window is that you can use an industrial strength zip tie for added security to your railing. These inconspicuous cable ties are a must have for your container garden.

If these designs appeal to your eye but just don’t complete the idea you had in mind for your deck railing, you can always contact HooksandLattice.com for a custom-made window box planter just for you. Browse through the Decora Window Box section of HooksandLattice.com to find the best railing planters that will bring your deck to life!

1st Place for Window Box on a Rail: Coming to Life: A Deck’s Transformation by Janet Sheehan

The transformation from the beginning of the season to the height of the season is just miraculous! Janet did a wonderful job making her grey patio into something that is just as beautiful as the forest behind her patio fence. Putting six flower window boxes on top of the rail creates a living wall, if you will, of falling vines and blossoming flowers once fully grown. Great job!

1st Place for Window Box on a Wall: Presidential Window Box Splendor by Kevin & Annette Klingel

We must say that this has to be one of the most well thought-out home improvement projects that we’ve had the pleasure to witness. Kevin and Annette updated their entire home from top to bottom and not forgetting about the middle, added ten black window boxes to their home, garage, and shed. Using black Presidential style window boxes that match their newly painted shutters and updated roof, they contrast perfectly against the light exterior of their home for a complete transformation.

1st Place for Most Creative Window Box: Winter Decor in Boxes on Garage Wall by Cathy Litrofsky

Cathy did a fantastic job getting creative with her living wall planters! Filling a vertical wall planter, which once had succulents in it for summer, she used winter evergreens for a festive holiday look and placed these three light blue planters on a large wall of her garage that doesn’t have a window, so she improvised and made her own accent living window.  Just as a window or piece of art, these vertical wall planters bring life to what was once a boring wall.

The People’s Choice Award: Summer on Flora St. by Julie DeMarco LaPorta

These window box planters were definitely a favorite among everyone. With large blossoms of Violets, Begonias, and Diamond Frost Euphorbias, these window boxes are definitely the center of attention on Julie’s street which just so happens to be Flora St. As that may be a coincidence, it is not by coincidence that these window boxes won the People’s Choice as these window boxes were without a doubt, the most plentiful and beautiful.

2015’s Top 6 Gardening Resolutions and Trends

It’s that time of year again, the time for making resolutions. Whether your resolutions are to get to the gym more, go to sleep earlier, or save more money, we’ve complied a couple resolutions that will still fall in line with the classic ones and a couple that that will be trending in the New Year.

Here are 2015’s Top 6 Gardening Resolutions & Trends:

  1. Get outside more. Take a walk around your building at lunch, walk around the block with your family after dinner, or do a little spring prep in the garden to ensure for a prosperous garden come springtime. Try container gardening if you’re in a region of the country where it’s just too cold to be outside right now. Window boxes with a cleat hanging system make perfect containers for small space gardening. Plant whatever your heart desires (keep in mind the small space), keep the box inside until it’s warmer outside, and then hang it below your window once it’s warm enough outside. 1. Use new gardening tools. If you’re an avid gardener or you’re just starting out, gardening tools are you best friends. Start off the New Year with new gardening tools. They’ll be all clean and shiny and you’ll want to get in the garden and yard ASAP to break them in. 1. Improve your home’s curb appeal. This is a biggie. You’re lucky if this can be accomplished in one afternoon, but for the rest of you, this will be an ongoing but incredibly rewarding project! All it takes is some motivation (like seeing a gorgeous house on Pinterest), dedication, and a plan. You can improve your home’s curb appeal by simply mowing the grass, trimming the grass along the sidewalk, and pruning bushes and trees. But if you really want to differentiate your home from all the other houses on the block, think about installing exterior window shutters, window boxes, or flanking your front door with planters with tall topiaries. Click Here to meet Sage, she’s our curb appeal expert. Follow us on YouTube and we’ll let you know when she has her next curb appeal tips video!

  1. Try new plants. This may seem daunting as you are probably very comfortable in your current flower/plant situation. But isn’t that was the New Year is all about, trying something different? Add a more colorful arrangement of flowers to your planters, mix it up with different heights and densities of plants, and plant some veggies that you’d like to cook up later to go along with the next resolution.

  1. Eat healthier. This one can be a little difficult for those of you that work from sun up to sun down but there are small and also very affordable ways you can make small changes that will make a huge difference later. You can grow your own herbs in your kitchen. I mean, come on, who doesn’t love fresh basil and mint? With container gardening, you can even grow mushrooms, tomatoes, and micro greens right on your countertop. Click Here to view seed starters and tabletop grow boxes.
This should spice things up!

  1. Save more money. Isn’t this something everyone strives for in the New Year? You can accomplish this multiple ways this year. Save money on your water bill by using planter reservoirs in your pots and hanging baskets so you never need to worry about over or under watering your plants. You can also save money on your water bill by planting drought-tolerant plants that naturally require less water. Dramatically reduce your grocery expenses by growing your own herbs, veggies, tomatoes, and lettuce. Fresh Ways to Use Christmas Wreaths

Welcome guests with the fresh look and SMELL of balsam pine boughs.

Welcome guests with the fresh look and SMELL of balsam pine boughs.

Fresh Ways to Use Christmas Wreaths

Smells have a way of evoking feelings and memories from long ago.  For me, the smell of cut pine will forever make me think of carefully crafting Christmas wreaths with my father in our back yard.  While I no longer make my own holiday wreaths thanks to time constraints and lack of easy access to materials, I enjoy the flood of memories that comes whenever I get a strong whiff of evergreen.

Fresh Christmas wreaths have been used for centuries to celebrate the season.  Traditionally hung on the front door to welcome guests from next door or across the county, creative homeowners have been coming up with some interesting Christmas decorating ideas using this age old symbol of the season.

Where to hang your Christmas Wreaths

While a wreath hung on the front door will never go out of style, there is no reason to stop there.  With a little imagination, a wreath can be turned into a multi-purpose Christmas decoration.

In a window

Many holiday wreaths are hand crafted works of art, to beautiful to keep to yourself.  If you are looking to share your Christmas spirit with the whole neighborhood but don’t want to subject your wreaths to the elements, try hanging wreaths inside your home in street facing windows.  If you like the idea of a wreath hanging in your window but want to enjoy it yourself, just hang your wreath inside the curtains.

Over your table

A big part of Christmas celebrations is the family meal.  The memories made when gathered around the table with close friends and family really is the reason for the season.  Help bring the spirit of the season to the dining room by hanging a wreath horizontally above the dinner table like a holiday chandelier.  Any meal eaten under a wreath is bound to be filled with joy and holiday spirit.

Above your bed

Around the holiday season, sleep can become pretty rare.  Between visits with rarely seen relatives, late night and early morning shopping trips, and the always-enjoyable gift wrapping sessions, sleep deprivation can set in early around Christmas.  When you do get the chance lay your head down, wouldn’t it be nice to drift off with memories of Christmases past floating through mind?  Hanging a wreath above your headboard is a great way to remind yourself why you love the season each night before bed.

This year when you decorate for Christmas, remember that wreathes are not just for the front door, spread the joy around your home with these Christmas decorating ideas. For the highest quality fresh Christmas wreaths visit HooksandLattice.com. Handcrafted fresh Christmas wreaths shipped express to doorsteps around the country and guarateed.

A quick and easy way to add character to a home and boost curb appeal is to add a faux balcony. It provides a unique and personalized look without the need for expensive construction of building an actual balcony. Plus, it adds a whimsical touch to both the inside and outside of your home. Here are three ways to use iron home accents to create a faux balcony that really makes a statement:

Add faux balconies with no offset to windows and doors for a boost of upscale curb appeal.

Juliet Balcony

Named after the great Shakespeare character, Juliet balconies are faux balconies that look like they could be real, but it lies nearly flat against the home. Their iron accents create visual interest and elongate the window, while creating the look of a French door. The Westwood Decorative Balcony mixes contemporary and classic styles for an interesting piece that will match most architectural styles. While Juliet balconies aren’t functional, they bring a sense of the outdoors in and are a great boost to the exterior of your home. For the complete look, use a Juliet balcony off the master bedroom, or across all windows on the upper level to create a uniform and stylish look.

Short Faux Balcony

While most Juliet balconies tend to be taller, some houses look best with shorter, more traditional faux balconies. The key to finding a decorative iron balcony that matches your home is to look at proportions. For homes with a shorter roof or less room under the window, a short faux balcony, such as this classic option, is the way to go. The shorter wrought iron decorative balcony adds interest and enhances the look of the windows without drowning out the rest of the home.

Pottery shelf

A less traditional take on the faux balcony is to install a decorative pottery shelf. Pottery shelves extend further from the home and are shorter underneath the window that other faux balconies. Like the name implies, they can hold pots or window boxes and can add a burst of colorful flowers to your home. The Dayspring pottery shelf is a charming option that looks great with or without plants and flowers inside. Although the shelf itself is shorter underneath the window, some pottery shelves like this scroll base model, have decorative iron elements underneath the shelves.

No matter which faux balcony you choose, the inside and outside of your home will benefit. The exterior will be lengthened and have an added charming touch, and the inside of your home will be opened and expanded with more access to the great outdoors. Faux balconies are the perfect simple way to make a big statement.
